Senator reports energy firms to advertising watchdog over 'greenwashing' claims
Senator Lynn Boylan has lodged formal complaints against Pinergy and SSE Airtricity with the Advertising Standards Authority of Ireland for making misleading "100% renewable energy" claims. These companies argue their electricity is fully renewable, but the reality is that Ireland’s grid relies on only a minority of renewable sources, with the majority generated by fossil fuels and other non-renewable methods. Boylan argues this constitutes textbook greenwashing because individual renewable energy purchases are mixed with non-renewable power within the national grid before reaching consumers. Consequently, providers cannot truthfully claim their electricity is entirely sustainable, as customers receive a blended supply rather than exclusively green power, regardless of the supplier’s procurement strategy. This case is highly relevant to greenwashing because it tests the enforcement of precedents set by previous regulatory rulings. The Advertising Standards Authority previously banned similar claims against another provider, Energia. By holding these companies accountable, the authority demonstrates whether its industry-wide standards are effective or if companies can continue to exploit ambiguous definitions to mislead consumers about their environmental impact.
