The recent research by SIX and Coalition Greenwich reveals that technology is the primary driver in shaping market data decisions for both buy-side and sell-side entities. The study, conducted from April to July 2024, involved 67 respondents from asset managers, wealth managers, and broker dealers across the U.S., U.K., Europe, and Asia. A significant increase in the adoption of cloud technology was observed, with half of the respondents now using both public and private cloud hosting applications for data delivery, up from 30% the previous year. Additionally, the use of advanced technologies, such as API delivery formats, is expected to grow, with 70% of institutions anticipating a greater shift to APIs in the next three to five years. Investors are projecting robust use of emerging technologies, particularly Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML), to enhance market data delivery and consumption. The surge in interest for real-time data, which is becoming a competitive differentiator, supports the adoption of more advanced technologies. Despite the projected rise in spending on market data for the second consecutive year, respondents continue to prioritize data quality, accuracy, and reliability when selecting market data types, frequency, and vendor. Roy Kirby, Head of Core Products, Financial Information, SIX, emphasized the transformative impact of new and emerging technologies on market data delivery and access methods. He highlighted the importance of a solid data foundation, with cloud and APIs adding greater value to market participants and driving growth. David Easthope, Senior Analyst for Coalition Greenwich Market Structure & Technology, also stressed the significance of high-quality data in supporting investment decision-making, especially with the increasing use of generative AI and the shift toward higher frequencies of data and more efficient data delivery. The full report is available for further insights into the trends and challenges of consuming market data.
