Innovating For Impact : Creating Conditions For Growth With Pure Harvest Smart Farms
Pure Harvest Smart Farms, a UAE-based company specializing in controlled environment agriculture, is revolutionizing food production in the desert by growing strawberries, lettuce, and melons. With 80% of the UAE being desert and 90% of its food imported, the government is promoting local food production to enhance food security. Pure Harvest s high-tech greenhouses, which utilize natural light and sophisticated environmental controls, require a highly efficient thermal management system. Trane® has provided a sustainable solution comprising heat pumps and centrifugal chillers using near-zero GWP R-1233zd refrigerant. This system is designed to maintain a stable indoor environment despite extreme outdoor temperature fluctuations. The Trane system not only meets the greenhouse s heating and cooling needs but also minimizes power and water usage, aligning with Pure Harvest s economic model. The project aims to reduce carbon emissions by 8293 metric tons per year, lower water usage, and decrease food loss and transportation pollution. Pure Harvest s success in the UAE has led to similar installations in Saudi Arabia and Kuwait, demonstrating the potential for sustainable solutions in food production. Trane Technologies is committed to supporting public initiatives that improve food security, water conservation, skilled job creation, and economic diversification. This project is featured on the Healthy Spaces Podcast and further details can be found in Trane Technologies 2023 ESG Report.
