Katherine Grainger presents Oxford United with stadium award

The OxPropFest Awards recognized Oxford United s new stadium project as the deal of the year, with Dame Katherine Grainger, a gold rowing medalist for Great Britain at the 2012 Olympics, presenting the award. The ceremony, held at Keble College in Oxford, celebrated its seventh year and marked the second time the club s stadium project received accolades, having previously won the ESG Strategy Award. Jonathon Clarke, the development director, emphasized the significance of the proposed move to The Triangle near Kidlington, which he described as a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to build a world-class stadium. The club aims to create a multi-functional Oxfordshire hub that positively impacts communities both within and outside its catchment areas. The club s plans for a 16,000-capacity stadium include a hotel, restaurant, conference center, health and wellbeing space, gym, and a community plaza. The planning application for the new stadium is expected to be considered in early 2025. However, concerns have been raised about the project, particularly by Ian Middleton, leader of the Green party on Cherwell District Council. He criticized the county council for handing over publicly-owned land with little regard for the local population s impact. Middleton also highlighted ongoing road closures and local opposition to the project, which he believes may not be in the best interest of the local community. In response, an Oxfordshire County Council spokesman stated that these matters are for Cherwell District Council to address as the planning authority. The club is required to secure planning permission as part of its obligations in the option to lease the land from the county council.
