Nokia intros sustainability calculator to show private 5G green creds
Nokia has introduced a sustainability calculator to help enterprises estimate the environmental and operational benefits of using private 4G (LTE) and 5G networks for Industry 4.0 applications. The tool aims to demonstrate how edge networking and computing technologies can deliver a return on investment through improved operations, safety, and reduced costs and carbon emissions. Developed in collaboration with PwC, the calculator uses the Total Impact Measurement and Management (TIMM) framework to quantify societal costs and benefits in monetary terms. The calculator considers various environmental impacts, such as extending the life of industrial equipment through targeted maintenance, reducing transportation downtime and fuel consumption, and enhancing worker health and safety by connecting sensors and monitors to identify hazards. Nokia cites a report by GlobalData, which found that 79% of enterprises experienced a 10% reduction in greenhouse emissions after deploying private 4G/5G solutions. The calculator also highlights the symbiotic relationship between operations and environmental benefits. For instance, autonomous trucks connected to private 4G/5G networks can reduce fuel consumption and wear and tear by an average of seven%. Additionally, mid-sized chemical plants with private 4G/5G networks have seen a 35% decrease in health and safety incidents, saving about €1.4 million in societal costs. Nokia s commitment to reaching net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2040 is supported by this calculator, which showcases the potential of private networks to help businesses become more environmentally friendly. The tool is a significant step towards quantifying the benefits of digital transformation in addressing social and environmental challenges. PwC s sustainability partner, Tom Beagent, emphasizes the importance of technology in tackling these challenges and monetizing impacts using frameworks like TIMM. This helps decision-makers understand the social and environmental return on investment and the role technology can play in achieving sustainability goals. The calculator is initially pitched to the mining, manufacturing, and port industries, with Nokia having deployed private 4G and 5G
