New perspectives for plastic waste

Malaysia, ranked as the eighth-most-polluted country globally due to plastic waste, has initiated the mandatory extended producer responsibility project as part of the Malaysian Plastics Conservation Framework 2021-2030. This strategy aims to revolutionize waste management and foster sustainable solutions. To engage university students in this critical endeavor, Star Media Group Bhd (SMG) organizes the Star Next-Gen Eco Innovators program. The program challenges students to ideate solutions to real-world business challenges related to plastic waste. The inaugural program, held at Sunway University, encourages students to rethink the use, management, and repurposing of plastic materials. Coca-Cola Malaysia supports the program, aligning with its World Without Waste strategy, which focuses on recyclable packaging, recycling, and partnerships for a healthy environment. The program, held at universities across Klang Valley, spans one-and-a-half days, featuring educational workshops and lateral thinking techniques. Students are divided into groups and guided by facilitators to explore new possibilities for a circular economy. Participants like Lim Chu Rong and Carol Chang, who are passionate about environmental initiatives and ESG principles, see the program as an opportunity to deepen their understanding and integrate sustainable practices into their lives. The proposals will be evaluated based on innovation, real-world application, and feasibility, with top teams advancing to a final summit. Through this initiative, SMG and Coca-Cola Malaysia aim to address the pressing environmental challenge of plastic waste and empower the next generation of eco-innovators.
