We need to embrace quality that will enable us to climb up value chain – MEA director general
The Malta Employers Association (MEA) is advocating for a shift in Malta s economic strategy, moving away from reliance on a large labor force and imported workers, towards a focus on quality, new technologies, and innovation. Kevin J. Borg, the new director general of MEA, emphasized the need for companies to adapt to a dynamic business environment that prioritizes quality and technological advancements. The MEA s 2025 Budget Proposals document calls for strategic investment in infrastructure, healthcare, social benefits, education, and the environment, while also addressing talent shortages and quality of life issues. The MEA is urging political leaders to create a long-term vision for Malta s economic and social objectives, with social partners actively contributing to this process. The association is also closely monitoring the government s initiative to limit foreign worker employment in certain sectors, as it has caused complications in logistics and transport. Borg highlighted the importance of balancing the needs of employers and employees, aiming for win-win situations. The MEA is committed to guiding businesses through digital transformation, promoting remote work policies, and fostering employee well-being. Additionally, the MEA is actively promoting awareness and adoption of ESG principles, emphasizing the benefits of responsible entrepreneurship and sustainable practices. In summary, the MEA is calling for a reconfiguration of priorities in Malta s economic model, focusing on quality, innovation, and upskilling. The association aims to support businesses in adapting to new technologies and fostering a healthy work environment, while also contributing to the development of long-term policies that benefit both employers and employees.
