Trinity’s Environmental Society has expressed concerns over the appointment of Professor Karen Wiltshire as the CRH Chair of Climate Science, due to CRH s significant role in the construction industry and its status as Ireland s third-largest carbon emitter. The Society criticizes Trinity s acceptance of funds from companies with reputations for hindering effective climate action, such as Ryanair and Coca-Cola. The Society accuses Trinity of engaging in greenwashing by prioritizing industry interests over genuine environmental concerns. They urge Trinity to address the root causes of environmental issues, which they attribute to a capitalist agenda driven by a constant need for growth. The Society suggests that Trinity should support organizations like the Fossil Fuel Non-Proliferation Treaty and hold the government accountable for its environmental failures. While CRH s direct influence on Professor Wiltshire s work is not significant, the Society s main concern is Trinity s perceived complicity in greenwashing and the need for a more environmentally conscious approach.
