Clothing giant Shein faces greenwashing investigation in Italy

Italy s antitrust watchdog, AGCM, is investigating Shein, an online fast fashion giant, for potentially making misleading claims about its sustainability practices. The investigation will focus on Infinite Styles Serves Co. Limited, a Dublin-based company that operates Shein s website and app. Shein, founded in China and now based in Singapore, has gained popularity through a business model that delivers apparel based on real-time demand from factories in China. Despite Shein s claims of working to combat environmental waste and overconsumption, critics argue that the company s practices contribute to these issues. The Italian authority alleges that Shein s environmental references on its Italian website are deceptive or incomplete. Specifically, the authority cited Shein s evoluShein collection, which may have misled consumers into believing the clothes could be recycled. Moreover, AGCM claims that Shein s commitment to decarbonization, as stated on its website, contradicts the increases in greenhouse gas emissions reported in Shein s sustainability reports for 2022 and 2023. Shein has faced challenges in Europe, with critics and advocacy groups opposing its possible listing on the London Stock Exchange due to labor and environmental concerns. In response to the investigation, Shein has pledged to cooperate and reaffirm its commitment to complying with laws and regulations in the markets where it operates, as well as maintaining transparency with its customers.
