Petco shifts to adoption - only for rabbits amid pressure from advocacy group
Petco, a pet retailer, has announced a commitment to only offering rabbits for adoption, aligning with its Think Adoption First philosophy. This decision comes after a pilot program involving the sale of fewer than 50 rabbits in select locations. The company aims to address concerns raised by the Rabbit.org Foundation about impulsive purchases and promote responsible rabbit care. To encourage adoption, Petco will provide a 20% Start Right discount for those adopting rabbits from established rescue or adoption groups through October. Additionally, any remaining miniature rabbits previously available for purchase at select Petco locations will now be offered for adoption. The Helen Woodward Animal Center in San Diego, California, is also capitalizing on the Halloween season by hosting their own OlymPETS games to showcase adoptable animals. The Rabbit.org Foundation praised Petco s decision, stating it is a significant step in protecting rabbits from neglect, abandonment, and exploitation. The information in this report was sourced from Petco s online statement and the Rabbit.org Foundation s online statement. The story was reported from Los Angeles.
