Online Tool Supports Decisions About Breast Recons

A randomized trial published in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery® found that an online decision aid (pDA) can help women with breast cancer undergoing mastectomy make informed decisions about immediate breast reconstruction (IBR). The study, conducted at eight Dutch centers, included 250 patients and compared the pDA with a standard informational leaflet. The pDA provided evidence-based information on breast reconstruction options and supported patients in clarifying their personal values affecting their treatment decision. Upon completing the pDA, patients received a summary sheet outlining their breast reconstruction preferences. The study found that women using the pDA felt better prepared for decision-making compared to those who received the informational leaflet. Both groups experienced a decrease in decisional conflict over time, with about 13% of patients in both groups having clinically significant decisional conflict. Other assessments, such as shared decision-making and satisfaction with breast reconstruction information, were similar between groups. About 70% of women in both groups opted for IBR. The researchers concluded that both the online pDA and the informational leaflet were helpful for breast cancer patients considering IBR. The online format of the pDA allowed for easier adaptations to future developments in breast reconstruction options and scientific evidence. The study s findings are timed to coincide with Breast Cancer Awareness Month and Breast Reconstruction Awareness Day, which aim to educate women about post-cancer breast reconstruction options and outcomes. The study highlights the importance of providing evidence-based information and support to women making decisions about their care.
