Returnable beauty packaging aims to reduce plastic waste in e - commerce

Reposit, City to Sea, M&S, and Ecover are expanding their pre-filled returnable packaging scheme to include ARRAN Sense of Scotland and Mama Bamboo s beauty and personal care products, aiming to reduce plastic waste in e-commerce. Research shows that 95% of the public is concerned about plastic pollution, with 45% citing a lack of reusable packaging options as a barrier. The buy anywhere, return anywhere scheme, supported by UKRI s Smart Sustainable Plastic Packaging Fund, is now available across multiple channels and sectors. Beauty Kitchen will sell six products in returnable Reposit packaging via Abel and Cole, with consumers able to return the packaging for a discount on their next purchase. ARRAN Sense of Scotland and Mama Bamboo are also distributing products in returnable packaging. M&S has expanded its reuse system to 25 stores, offering pre-filled homecare products in returnable packaging, saving 15,000 pieces of plastic. The initiative has demonstrated its commercial, operational, and environmental scalability, cutting down on single-use plastic and accelerating the transition to a circular economy. The consortium is working with key industry names to grow their in-store presence and expand into new industries. The government is called upon to support and expedite the positive effects of these programs. Beauty Kitchen and Mama Bamboo are leading the way in sustainability within the beauty industry, urging other brands to join the movement towards reusable packaging solutions. The Beauty Takeback Scheme by M&S aims to keep over two tonnes of empty beauty packaging out of landfill within the first year. Overall, these initiatives are gaining momentum across the country, with the retailer and industry specialists creating a system that works for both people and the planet.
