From the Favelas to Gaza: How militarism and greenwashing shape Brazilian relations, resistance, and solidarity with Palestine
Brazil’s foreign policy toward Israel exemplifies a stark contradiction between rhetorical solidarity with Palestine and sustained economic complicity in the occupation. Despite formal diplomatic recognition of the Palestinian state and critical statements regarding Israeli military actions, the Brazilian government has maintained deep commercial ties, particularly in oil, agribusiness, and defense. This dual approach allows Brazil to project moral leadership internationally while materially supporting the infrastructure of Israeli apartheid through ongoing trade and weapon procurement, regardless of shifting political administrations. This economic alignment is driven by powerful domestic coalitions, including the military-industrial complex and agribusiness elites, who normalize these relationships under the guise of technological innovation and climate-friendly partnerships. By framing these interactions as mutually beneficial development collaborations, these sectors effectively white-wash the regime’s crimes. This strategy obscures the reality that Brazilian exports sustain the occupation and imports of agricultural technology facilitate environmental exploitation, linking Israeli militarism directly to local human rights violations in Brazil. The article is critically relevant to greenwashing because it exposes how Israel utilizes environmental rhetoric to legitimize its economy and obscure its human rights abuses. Specifically, Israeli agritech and water companies package technologies as sustainable solutions, creating a false narrative of ecological benevolence that masks their role in enabling resource extraction and occupation. This case study illustrates how "greenwashing" serves as a diplomatic shield, allowing nations like Brazil to continue supporting an apartheid regime by reframing complicity as progress, thereby undermining genuine international accountability.
