Is Greenhushing The New Greenwashing?
Is Greenhushing The New Greenwashing?
The fashion industry has long been criticized for rampant greenwashing, with a significant portion of environmental claims proven to be misleading or unsubstantiated. To combat this, the European Union’s upcoming Green Claims Directive mandates that brands substantiate their eco-friendly assertions with rigorous scientific evidence. This regulatory shift aims to eliminate vague buzzwords like “sustainable” or “eco-friendly” unless they are backed by verifiable data, directly targeting the disconnect between marketing narratives and environmental reality. In response to stricter scrutiny, many companies may increasingly adopt “greenhushing,” deliberately withholding information about their sustainability initiatives to avoid accusations of greenwashing. This cautious approach stems from a fear of being called out by regulators, media, and consumers, leading some brands to remove specific sustainable labels or avoid publicizing science-based targets altogether. While intended to ensure accuracy, this silence raises concerns that companies might retreat into obscurity rather than transparently demonstrating their progress. This trend is highly relevant to the greenwashing discourse because it highlights a potential unintended consequence of regulatory crackdowns: the loss of industry-wide transparency. If brands stop communicating their efforts entirely, the peer pressure and inspiration needed to accelerate industry-wide sustainability could diminish. However, greenhushing may also signal a necessary transitional phase, forcing the sector to move beyond superficial marketing claims and prioritize genuine, demonstrable improvements in environmental performance.
