A coalition of environmental organizations warns that the EU’s new proposal for the Environmental Taxonomy, expanded to include biodiversity, pollution, and the circular economy, risks institutionalizing greenwashing if it is not improved. These entities argue that the current criteria lack sufficient scientific rigor, which would allow clearly unsustainable activities to be classified as sustainable, repeating the mistakes made by including nuclear energy and natural gas as green investments. The criticisms focus on four specific areas that could inappropriately receive green funding: single-use plastic packaging, maritime transport using liquefied natural gas (LNG), aviation based on fossil fuels, and biodiversity offsets. Experts point out that these inclusions not only lack scientific rigor but may also lock in polluting infrastructure and divert millions of euros toward highly emitting sectors, hindering genuine decarbonization and creating stranded assets in the future. This debate is crucial for the fight against greenwashing because the taxonomy serves as the official compass directing capital toward sustainable investments. If these “loopholes” or misleading green labels are allowed, the credibility of sustainable finance is undermined, and polluting companies can exploit the regulation to improve their image, moving away from the scientific limits necessary to combat climate change.
