Blue Skies (BS) Thinking Comes With Lashings Of Greenwash In Sarawak
The article argues that Sarawak’s government is engaging in systematic greenwashing by promoting destructive fossil fuel projects under the guise of sustainability. Initiatives like carbon capture and green hydrogen are framed as eco-friendly innovations, yet they primarily serve to extract remaining resources and generate profit for political elites. This marketing strategy masks the reality that these ventures often exacerbate environmental degradation rather than mitigating it, utilizing misleading labels to justify continued exploitation of natural heritage. Transparency and accountability are notably absent from these investments, which are frequently driven by the Premier’s personal connections rather than rigorous scientific or legislative scrutiny. The establishment of a state development bank with opaque funding sources enables rapid approval of questionable projects without public consultation or proper oversight. Consequently, the financial risks are borne by the state and its citizens, while the economic benefits are concentrated among cronies, leaving local communities without promised improvements in basic infrastructure or welfare. The environmental consequences of these "blue sky" policies are severe, including potential carbon leakage that worsens climate change and marine acidification. Furthermore, the reliance on hydroelectric dams from past projects to produce green hydrogen contradicts the sustainability narrative, as the initial construction caused significant ecological destruction. Ultimately, the article highlights how corporate and political interests hijack environmental terminology to legitimize harmful practices, illustrating a critical example of greenwashing where marketing outweighs genuine ecological responsibility.
