The Latin American Observatory of Environmental Conflicts (OLCA) has denounced that the Canadian company Aclara Resources has updated its greenwashing strategy to present a rare earths mining project in Chile as a sustainable and clean initiative. This image-cleansing campaign includes the creation of a demonstration center and the use of misleading descriptors, acting as a "Plan B" to counteract the strong rejection by local communities and institutions. The promotion relies on spreading falsely positive testimonials through sectoral entities and obtaining sustainability awards granted by organizations known for selling distinctions to companies with questionable track records. These mechanisms aim to project a facade of environmental and social responsibility, concealing the reality of a large-scale extractive operation that involves massive land destruction and intensive use of natural resources. This initiative is crucial for understanding greenwashing because it exposes how the mining industry uses ecological aesthetics to mask devastating impacts. The analysis reveals that, despite the green rhetoric, the resulting chemical mining generates an irreversible environmental disaster, contaminates water and soil with toxic substances, and threatens public health. The case illustrates the complete disconnect between the marketed sustainability narrative and the truly destructive nature of the project.
