Land back, not greenwashing! Indigenous protesters denounce COP28
The article argues that COP28 represents a profound exercise in greenwashing, where capitalist elites used the conference to rebrand systemic exploitation as environmental progress. By relying on nonbinding promises, carbon credits, and fossil fuel-friendly technologies, the summit failed to address the root causes of the climate crisis. Instead of meaningful regulation, the event prioritized the interests of multinational corporations and state-owned oil companies, effectively maintaining the status quo of ecological destruction while offering only superficial solutions to global leaders. Central to this critique is the overwhelming dominance of fossil fuel industry representatives and corporate advisors, such as McKinsey and BlackRock, within the conference’s structure. The leadership, including the COP president who heads a state oil company, actively resisted calls to phase out fossil fuels, demonstrating that the political will for genuine decarbonization is absent. This alignment reveals that the climate catastrophe is driven by the forces of capital, and the international mechanisms designed to address it are compromised by the very entities responsible for the damage, rendering financial pledges like the loss and damage fund insufficient and symbolic. Ultimately, the article connects ecological ruin to settler colonialism and genocide, asserting that true liberation requires dismantling these interconnected systems of exploitation. Activists highlighted how the same logic that displaces Indigenous peoples and destroys Palestinian lands also fuels climate change, arguing that a "green" world built on bloodshed is untenable. The relevance to greenwashing lies in exposing how environmental rhetoric is used to obscure ongoing violence and resource extraction, emphasizing that ecological justice cannot be separated from social justice and the liberation of oppressed Indigenous and Global South communities.
