Iberdola demanda a Repsol por “greenwashing”
Iberdrola has filed a lawsuit against Repsol for unfair competition, accusing the latter of engaging in misleading advertising by portraying itself as a sustainability leader despite its continued heavy reliance on fossil fuels. The energy company alleges that its rival conceals the true rise in its carbon emissions and makes minimal investments in renewable energy, practices that constitute greenwashing and mislead consumers about its actual environmental commitment. This dispute is part of a broader European trend, in which regulations such as the Directive on Empowering Consumers for the Green Transition aim specifically to penalize such unfair commercial practices. Greenwashing is not viewed as a mere side effect, but rather as a critical obstacle to the ecological transition, prompting authorities and new consumer protection laws to explicitly identify and prohibit false or exaggerated environmental claims. Repsol rejects the lawsuit, dismissing it as baseless and attributing it to competitive rivalry, while reaffirming its long-term strategy to achieve carbon neutrality. Nevertheless, the case is significant for understanding greenwashing, as it exemplifies how companies face legal challenges when marketing narratives outpace operational realities, under increasingly strict regulatory oversight that demands transparency and coherence between ecological promises and companies’ concrete actions.
