The article exposes how the authorities in Melilla are using environmental restoration projects as a tool for greenwashing, masking a destructive management of the territory. Although significant public funds were invested in planting seagrass meadows to supposedly reduce the carbon footprint, this initiative has been largely nullified by port activities and pollutant discharges that directly threaten the survival of local biodiversity. The contradiction is evident when observing that, while sustainability is promoted, the expansion of the port is planned with dredging operations that increase turbidity and the discharge of wastewater near restored areas. This disparity between official rhetoric and on-the-ground reality reveals that government actions prioritize urban and tourism development over genuine conservation, turning environmental mitigation efforts into empty symbolic gestures that fail to protect ecosystems. This situation is relevant to the concept of greenwashing because it perfectly illustrates the disconnect between environmental communication and operational practice. It shows how public money is used to create an appearance of ecological responsibility while continuing practices that degrade habitats. The case serves as a key example of how greenwashing can hide real environmental damage, deceiving the public and distorting the true understanding of the ecological crisis.
