As Pacific Islanders, we need climate action – not greenwashing – from Azerbaijan
The article argues that Azerbaijan, as the host of COP29, is perpetuating greenwashing by promoting a fund that allows its state oil company to continue fossil fuel expansion while masking these activities under the guise of climate finance. The author condemns this approach as a cynical distraction from the urgent need to phase out fossil fuels, highlighting that the proposed financial mechanisms rely on market rates rather than the concessional support required for a genuine global energy transition. A significant concern is the misuse of accounting methods to inflate Azerbaijan’s emission reduction targets, which allows the country to claim progress while actually maintaining business-as-usual practices. By framing fossil fuel expansion as beneficial and offering a fund that lacks transparency and equity, the host nation fails to align with the scientific necessity of limiting warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius. This discrepancy between rhetoric and action undermines the integrity of the climate summit and betrays the trust of vulnerable nations disproportionately affected by climate change. This case is highly relevant to greenwashing because it illustrates how political actors can use symbolic gestures and financial instruments to create an illusion of environmental responsibility without implementing substantive policy changes. The criticism underscores the danger of allowing host countries with strong fossil fuel interests to dictate climate finance narratives, thereby obscuring the true costs of inaction. The article calls for authentic leadership and transparent funding mechanisms that prioritize justice and immediate decarbonization, rather than allowing corporate interests to dictate the pace of the global response.
