Créditos de Carbono y el greenwashing - Opinión - ABC Color

Paraguay’s recent regulatory framework for carbon credits presents a critical paradox: while it promises to attract sustainable investment and combat climate change, the lack of information and in-depth studies creates fertile ground for irregularities. This legal and technical ambiguity allows economic actors to operate with opacity, generating serious risks ranging from financial speculation and money laundering to the dispossession of local communities. The relevance of this article lies in how it illustrates the central mechanism of greenwashing in this context. Without effective oversight mechanisms, companies can purchase credits to appear sustainable without actually reducing emissions. This disincentivizes investment in clean technologies, perpetuating pollution, as the market becomes a speculative bubble rather than a genuine tool for decarbonization. Greenwashing emerges when compensation replaces real emission reductions, undermining the credibility of global climate efforts. To combat these distortions, three essential pillars are emphasized: independent certification under international standards, absolute transparency through public transaction registries, and public education. Only through rigorous supervision and citizen scrutiny can it be ensured that projects are credible and verifiable. Without these concrete measures, the credit system becomes vulnerable to abuse, transforming an environmental tool into a vehicle for corporate deception and real climate inaction.
