2025, un año clave en la lucha contra el ecoblanqueo
The article explains that the growing ecological awareness has enabled brands and governments to engage in greenwashing, deceiving the public by presenting non-sustainable products as environmentally friendly. This ethically questionable practice is supported by the technical complexity of environmental indicators and the strategic omission of negative information, exploiting consumers' lack of specific training to disguise real impacts as positive. The massive proliferation of eco-labels, especially in sectors such as food and pharmaceuticals outside the initial harmonized regulation, generates confusion and creates an environment where it is easy to slip in empty claims. Lacking uniform and mandatory criteria, these voluntary labels lack transparency, allowing companies to highlight favorable aspects while hiding significant environmental damage in other phases of the lifecycle, thereby distorting their original purpose of helping with responsible choices. To combat this deception, the European Union has implemented new directives that prohibit generic environmental claims without rigorous technical backing and require that eco-labels be based on official certifications. By imposing clear rules on durability and repairability information, the regulation aims to empower consumers and ensure the credibility of ecological claims, thus closing the door to marketing manipulation and promoting a genuine transition toward sustainability.
